BOTANICAL NAME: Anethum sowa

OTHERWISE KNOWN AS:  East Indian Dill

SCENT: Fresh, sweet, herbaceous, slightly earthy. The essential oil has a characteristic aroma, resembling that of caraway, and a sweet aromatic and subsequently pungent taste. It contains 43 to 63 % of carvone.

STRENGTH OF AROMA: Strong

COLOUR: Pale yellow that darkens with age

Anethi is an annual herb of the parsley family. It has a distinctive but mild caraway-like flavour. A winter crop, Anethi requires a well-drained, sandy soil with full exposure to sunlight. The sub tropical and temperate regions of India, particularly the northern parts, produce high quality Anethi.

History of Anethi:

Also known as East Indian Dill, the essential oil is used extensively in foods, beverages and medicines in the Far East but not in Europe. Its essential oil constitutes an important flavouring for the Indian pickles industry.
