Mandravasarotra (Cinnamosma fragrans) is a very aromatic evergreen plant from the northern woodlands of Madagascar. It likes dense undergrowth such as underneath thick tree canopy and prefers a dry environment. It can get from between 4 and 5 metres in height and has a high shine on its large leaves

Mandravasarotra is also sometimes called Saro and in Malagasy, the language of Madagascar, means “that which keeps illnesses at bay”.

It is related to Cinnamomum camphora – the camphor tree.

Reported Attributes of Mandravasarotra Essential Oil:-

It is not traditionally used in aromatherapy but is of increasing interest for its strong anti-viral, antibacterial and anti-fungal properties. It is reputed that its anti-inflammatory properties make it an ideal massage oil for sore muscles especially. It is also reputed to be an auto immune stimulant and is used in Madagascar specifically to treat coughs and to help heal small wounds.

It contains cineole combined with a-pinene, and both are considered as an expectorant and mucolytic which is one of the reasons it has a reputation for coughs.  The essential oil is not thought to be toxic or irritating for human use but is a new (ish) essential oil to the West and much more research really needs to performed.
