Malaleuca ericifolia, from which Lavender Tea Tree Essential Oil is distilled, is also known as Rosalina or Swamp Paperbark Tree. It is a tall erect evergreen bushy shrub to small tree, 6-12 metres in height with grayish papery bark. Its Leaves are soft, alternate, narrow, and the flowers white to cream coloured. The tree can be found distributed in low lying swamps, creeks and behind sand dunes. Southern Victoria along the coast to Northern NSW and Bass Strait Islands. Lavender Tea Tree comes from the same family as tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) and enjoys many of the same attributes as its more famous cousin.

The main constituent of this essential oil, linalool, is a well known antiseptic, spasmolytic and anticonvulsant. It is a useful vapourising oil for upper respiratory tract congestion and infections. It is a gentle expectorant with good anti-infectious properties, as well as being a deeply relaxing and calming oil which would be helpful in times of stress and insomnia.
