Bay essential oil is extracted from the dried leaves and berries of the bay rum tree. A native of South America, it is now grown in Barbados, Jamaica and throughout the West Indies. It should not be confused with teh Bay we use as a herb in cooking which has its own essential oil and is known as Laurel or Laurel Bay.

West Indian bay leaves have traditionally been steeped in rum to make hair tonic. The leaves are mildly antiseptic and helps treat or greasy hair flaky scalps.The essential oil has a woody, masculine, clove-like smell and is both warming and stimulating. It is antiseptic and has astringent properties. In aromatherapy Bay essential oil is excellent as a scalp stimulant removing grease from hair and bringing blood to the skin surface, It is also good for poor circulation, cellullite or muscular aches.

History:

Bay essential oil was very popular with the Romans, who thought Bay was a symbol of wisdom, peace and protection. The Latin ‘Laudis’ means ‘to praise”, which is why the victors at the Olympic games were presented with a Laurel (Bay) Wreath. In the past West Indian Bay leaves were distilled with rum. The Bay rum so obtained was a famous hair tonic and body rub for colds and muscle pains.

CAUTIONS: Bay essential oil has a high eugenol content and may irritate the skin and mucus membranes, so use with caution.
