The Cinnamon Tree (Cinnamomum zeylanicum) and from which this Cinnamon Seed Essential Oil is distilled, is an evergreen native to China and Vietnam that has since been cultivated in many other regions of the world. It has large shiny, leathery green leaves, and small, white flowers with oval shaped purple berries. The best is now considered to come from Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon) and the essential oil from the bark or seed is much rarer than the more usually sold leaf oil.

From a spiritual perspective, it is believed to have a warming, uplifting characteristic. It is reputed to have antiseptic properties and with its popular aroma is often added to creams, soaps and lotions. This editor is of the opinion that cinnamon oils (bark, seed and leaf) should be avoided in aromatherapy but as a burning oil, for its fragrance, it is certainly heartening and warming.

Medicinal use of cinnamon was first recorded in Chinese formularies as early as 2700 B.C. The herb has been used as a healing aid for stomach upset and gas, diarrhoea, rheumatism, kidney ailments, and abdominal pain. The Egyptians used it as a foot massage, as well as a remedy for excessive bile. It was used as an ingredient of mulled wines, love potions and a sedative during birth.
CAUTIONS:Cinnamon essential oil can be irritating to the skin and mucous membranes – particularly in large doses. It should always be used in dilution.
