Cymbopogon citratus from which Citral Essential oil is derived is a species of grass which is a fast growing, tall, aromatic perennial grass growing up to around 1.5 metres in height. Errors are often made in comparing Citral with Lemongrass. They are, indeed, similar in many respects but Lemongrass essential oil is derived from the Cymbopogon flexuosus, a related plant.
It is relatively easy for the individual to grow in temperate climates but is not at all frost resistant so needs indoor protection in Winter.
